As part of our willingness to meet people where they’re at, a team from South Park Inn canvasses the community in a weekly street outreach program. They visit various sites, including locations under bridges, below highway overpasses, community parks, the Connecticut River waterfront, wooded campsites, and other out-of-the-way places that individuals are sleeping and living outdoors.
Outreach staff approach and build rapport with those they find by providing bag lunches, blankets, clean clothing, and other essential items. They also work to gently engage the men and women that they find in conversations about housing and try to address the fears and concerns that they may have about coming into shelter. While this process may take a significant amount of time, outreach staff extend an open invitation for individuals to come to South Park Inn to access the facilities, supplies, and support that they may need. Our hope is that as they become more familiar and comfortable with staff, we can assist to make progress toward housing plans that are safe and permanent.
